National Sanitation Day to Reintroduce Sanitation Guards – Local Govt Minister

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced plans to reintroduce sanitation guards, popularly known as Samansaman , as part of efforts to enforce compliance with the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day. According to Hon. Ibrahim, this move aims to strengthen compliance in communities nationwide and raise awareness of sanitation-related issues. The Minister also stated that the National Sanitation Day would be treated as a health priority, with necessary measures in place to ensure its success. Speaking at a meeting with editors in Accra on Thursday, Hon. Ibrahim, accompanied by his Deputy, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, noted that Ghana is grappling with a sanitation crisis, which has led to cholera outbreaks. 78 GIS Officers Recalled, Disciplinary Process Awaits

The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Samuel Basintale Amadu, has recalled 78 officers from interdiction, reaffirming his commitment to discipline and due process within the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). The recalled officers consist of 14 senior officers and 64 other ranks, who were previously interdicted for their alleged involvement in recruitment and visa scams, among other offenses. Speaking at a meeting with the recalled officers at the National Headquarters in Accra, CGI Amadu clarified that the recall does not amount to an amnesty. Instead, the officers will undergo internal disciplinary procedures to determine their culpability. Those found guilty of misconduct will face appropriate sanctions. The CGI emphasized that disciplinary issues would no longer be prolonged under his administration, as he aims to ensure accountability and maintain the Service’s professional standards. Stakeholders advocate for better compensation package for affected mining communities

Electrochem’s Ada Salt Deal in Jeopardy

The 15-year mining lease agreements for Electrochem Ghana Limited, a private salt mining company to mine salt on the Ada Songhor Lagoon appears to be in jeopardy with the withdrawal of consent to the agreement by the allodia owners of the lagoon.  The latest blow to Electrochem which is owned by Daniel McKorley, Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies is the withdrawal of consent by Nene Korley IV who is the Divisional Chief and Clan-head of the Tekperbiawe Clan of the Ada Traditional Area.  In a letter written to Mr. McKorley through his lawyers A-F Amissah & Wood Solicitors and Barristers Consultants dated 11th February 2025 and titled, “Letter of Withdrawal of Consent to Electrochem’s Dealing With the Songor Lagoon”, Nene Korley IV cited thuggery, insecurity in Ada, violation of rights of the indigenes and locals among others as the reasons for his withdrawal of consent to the company’s dealings with the Songor lagoon.  As part of efforts to promote good oral hygiene, Family Health University (FHU) and Family Health Hospital (FHH) joined the global celebration of World Oral Health Day on Thursday, March 20th, with an impactful event at Wajir Central Kindergarten and Wajir Barracks ‘B’ Primary School (Class 1 to 4) in Teshie, Accra. The event, held in collaboration with the Ledzokuku Municipal Education Directorate and supported by the Ghana Dental Association, aimed at raising awareness among school children about the important role of oral health in overall well-being. The school children were taken through engaging educational sessions on oral hygiene, proper brushing techniques, cavity prevention, and the right foods and drinks to maintain strong and healthy teeth.
