National Sanitation Day to Reintroduce Sanitation Guards – Local Govt Minister

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced plans to reintroduce sanitation guards, popularly known as Samansaman, as part of efforts to enforce compliance with the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day.

According to Hon. Ibrahim, this move aims to strengthen compliance in communities nationwide and raise awareness of sanitation-related issues. The Minister also stated that the National Sanitation Day would be treated as a health priority, with necessary measures in place to ensure its success.

Speaking at a meeting with editors in Accra on Thursday, Hon. Ibrahim, accompanied by his Deputy, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, noted that Ghana is grappling with a sanitation crisis, which has led to cholera outbreaks. He stressed that sanitation, rather than vaccination alone, is the key to combating cholera.

“Cholera is our current health challenge. We should not focus solely on vaccination. The solution to cholera is sanitation,” stated the MP for Banda.

Hon. Ibrahim revealed that GHC 5 million has been allocated for the National Sanitation Day initiative, which will be launched by President Mahama on April 2, 2025, with the main event taking place on April 5, 2025. The event will be held on the first Saturday of each month across all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The Minister urged editors and the media to support the National Sanitation Day as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by raising awareness about the initiative.

“Cholera does not discriminate, and neither does sanitation. We are all in this together. Treat National Sanitation Day as your CSR and encourage Ghanaians to get involved,” he emphasized.

Deputy Minister Rita Naa Odoley Sowah echoed this call, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing sanitation challenges through the initiative and urging the media to help promote nationwide participation.
