She emphasized that hunger is not a distant crisis but a daily reality for millions, particularly in Ghana where over one million people are food insecure and malnutrition remains alarmingly high among children. "World Hunger Day is not just a date on the calendar," she said. "It is a powerful moment for reflection and renewed commitment." Mrs. Quayson attributed the rising global hunger – up 20% in recent years – to complex challenges such as climate change, inequality, and conflict. Oil Drilling Resumes in Jubilee and OCTP Fields

Image
Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector has received a major boost as Tullow Ghana Ltd and Eni Ghana resume drilling operations in the Jubilee and Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) fields, respectively. This renewed activity follows the approval of the two drilling programmes by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Petroleum Commission. The drilling restart is being hailed as a strong signal of investor confidence in Ghana’s energy landscape, which had seen a slowdown in upstream activity in recent years. The two campaigns are expected not only to sustain oil production but also improve operational efficiency across the respective oil fields. Tullow has contracted the Noble Venturer Drillship , already in Ghanaian waters, to drill the JBE-P well in the Jubilee South-East area. This Full Field Development well is projected to take 60 days to complete, with an average initial production of 2,800 barrels of oil per day (bopd) in Q3 2025, ramping up to 4,500 bopd by 2026. The rig...

GRNMA Strike Premature, Says Health Ministry

Image
The Ministry of Health has called on the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to rescind its decision to embark on industrial action, describing the move as “shocking” and “unfortunate,” especially given ongoing engagements between both parties. The Ministry’s response comes after a press conference held by the GRNMA, during which the Association announced a series of strike actions over delays in implementing a reviewed Conditions of Service agreement. In a statement signed by Ministry Spokesperson Tony Goodman, the Ministry expressed disappointment at the decision, noting that the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has met with the GRNMA leadership on more than five occasions to address their concerns. According to the Ministry, the reviewed Conditions of Service—which were originally scheduled for implementation in 2024—were delayed under the previous administration. However, a consensus was recently reached to establish a committ...

In a strongly-worded press statement delivered by Generational Secretary Mr. Charles McCarthy and supported by President Mr. Kwadwo Yeboah, the group unveiled its "name-and-shame" campaign in the Eastern Region, which they say is ground zero for environmental degradation. TEAP's first target is Mr. Godwin N. Armah, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) and founder of Transeco Minerals and Mining Ltd. The group alleges that Mr. Armah’s operations in Nsuapemso, Kyebi Adadeatem, and Osino are marked by irresponsible mining practices—characterized by open, unreclaimed pits and environmental devastation. “Mr. Armah allegedly presents himself as a champion of responsible mining, but...

Speaking under the theme “Innovate, Invest, Implement: Revolutionised Financing for Sustainable Energy Sector Growth in Africa,” Jinapor emphasized that the time had come for a fundamental shift from extractive economic models to locally driven energy innovation. Instead, he urged African countries to embrace innovation, local ownership, and inclusive energy development anchored in a strong policy framework. The Minister pointed out the stark energy poverty facing the continent, with over 600 million people lackin...

When Aid Shrinks, Execution Must Rise

Image
George Asamani, Managing Director, Project Management Institute, Sub-Saharan Africa The announcement of deep cuts in US development assistance has cast a long shadow over Africa’s infrastructure ambitions. The African Development Fund, the continent’s principal vehicle for concessional financing, now faces a possible 37% drop in donor contributions, with Washington potentially withdrawing entirely, according to the Centre of Global Development. In March this year, the US withdrew from the Just Energy Transition Partnership, to which it had initially pledged more than $1.5-billion of grant and commercial funding.   Even if these cuts prove to be temporary, the damage may not be. Recovering lost momentum could mean sacrificing years of economic growth, delaying critical infrastructure projects, and widening the development gap. And if the decline signals a more permanent shift, then the implications are even more profound. Rather than wait for fortunes to swing again in their ...

After a long-standing litigation, the High Court (Labour Division) in Accra dismissed the claims of Bright Ampofo (Plaintiff), who is a staff member of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).  The court awarded costs of GHC 30,000 against Mr. Bright Ampofo in favour of Mr. Owusu-Koranteng and Mr...

“Women Must Reduce Chop Money”-William Sarpong Writes

Image
In every Ghanaian home, one of the most common and culturally accepted financial obligations is “chop money” or the housekeeping allowance men give to their wives for the daily upkeep of the home. Over the years, this money has quietly grown to symbolize not only domestic responsibility but also the fluctuating burden of economic conditions. Traditionally, when market prices rise, especially for food, fuel, and transport, it is the man’s duty to increase this allowance, often without question. Wives naturally adjust their demands to match the changing economic climate, and rightfully so. But what happens when the economy takes a different turn? Today, Ghana is experiencing a modest decline in the cost of essential goods and services. Transport fares have dipped slightly, food prices have seen a relative drop in some markets, and inflation appears to be easing. Thanks to improving supply chains and recent economic interventions. Yet, there’s an elephant in the room: should “chop money” ...

In his petition dated May 23, 2025, Mr. Apeakorang expressed grave concern over the growing trend of vulgar speech, sexually suggestive programming, and culturally offensive broadcasts that are frequently aired during peak hours when children and young audiences are exposed. He warned that such content threatens public morality, Ghanaian values, and the psychological development of the nation’s youth. Mr. Apeakorang acknowledged the existing guidelines of regulatory bodies like the National Media Commission (NMC) and the National Communications Authority (NCA) but noted that enforcement has been largely ineffective. He is therefore calling on Parliament to formulate a clear legal framework tha...

Nana Agradaa’s Online Conduct Sparks Petition

Image
A concerned Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang, has officially petitioned the National Security Coordinator to restrict the social media activities of Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, citing her persistent use of digital platforms to spread offensive and inflammatory content. In a letter dated May 23, 2025, Mr. Apeakorang expressed deep concern over what he described as Nana Agradaa’s erosion of public morality and her potential threat to national peace and cohesion. He accused her of using platforms such as Facebook and TikTok to promote unsubstantiated claims, insult public figures, and disseminate rhetoric that could disturb the peace. According to the petition, the magnitude of her following makes the unregulated use of such platforms dangerous to national harmony. Mr. Apeakorang is therefore urging the National Security Secretariat, in collaboration with the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), ...
