Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang Petitions Parliament Over Indecent Media Content
A concerned Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang, has submitted a formal petition to the Speaker of Parliament, urging the legislative body to initiate a national debate and enact laws to curb the rising tide of indecent language and inappropriate content on radio and television in Ghana.
In his petition dated May 23, 2025, Mr. Apeakorang expressed grave concern over the growing trend of vulgar speech, sexually suggestive programming, and culturally offensive broadcasts that are frequently aired during peak hours when children and young audiences are exposed. He warned that such content threatens public morality, Ghanaian values, and the psychological development of the nation’s youth.
Mr. Apeakorang acknowledged the existing guidelines of regulatory bodies like the National Media Commission (NMC) and the National Communications Authority (NCA) but noted that enforcement has been largely ineffective. He is therefore calling on Parliament to formulate a clear legal framework that defines and prohibits indecent broadcasting, strengthens regulatory enforcement, and stipulates penalties for violations.
According to him, responsible media content is essential for nurturing a well-informed and morally grounded society, and Parliament must act swiftly to safeguard Ghana’s cultural integrity and democratic standards.
