New Initiative Targets Mental Health on Streets

Stakeholders consisting of the police, social welfare offices of district Assemblies, Assemblymen and women among others in collaboration with “A New beginning Rehabilitation Centre” a mentally Health Oriented NGO, to take Mentally challenged persons who roam about in public places to Psychiatric Hospitals as matter of urgency
The C.E.O of the Organization, Mr. Osman Ahmed Okyere, disclosed this to Newsmen at a News Briefing in Accra recently. Mr. Ahmed Okyere said the Police are involved to professionally convey persons who are mentally challenged to Accra Psychiatric Hospital and Pantang Psychiatric Hospital for treatment.
He said the NGO will arrange for a letter to be sent to the Psychiatric Hospitals for the Assemblies where the Psychiatric Hospital fall within, to own up to the Hospital as stated in the Mental Health Act (Act. 846)
Mr. Osman Ahmed Okyere said the NGO has already started with the Ghana Police Service in Greater Accra through the office of the IGP, the police welfare office and Greater Accra Regional Police command to pick Mentally challenged persons-roaming in the streets to the Psychiatric Hospital last Tuesday 18/11/25


According to Mr. Ahmed Okyere, a patient who has been roaming around Weija Old Barrier was picked up by the toll booth police in collaboration with Weija – Gbawe social welfare office under the instruction of the Regional police commander of Greater Accra Police, Commander Duuti Tuasika.
Mr. Ahmed Okyere noted that the NGO is hoping that, this exercise would be sustainable to help offer medical treatment and after treatment support to mentally challenged persons roaming about in the streets.
