Afreh Biney Vows Faster Expansion, Tech-Focused Pension Delivery

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has officially inaugurated its 53rd branch in Adentan in the Greater Accra Region, as part of a national strategy to expand access, deepen customer relations, and transform the pension experience for Ghanaians through digital innovation and partnerships.

Delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony, Acting Director-General of SSNIT, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, underscored the institution’s commitment to operational efficiency, accessibility, and superior customer experience. "We will continue to significantly deepen our relationships with members by increasing the number of branches rapidly, spearheading digital innovation, and leveraging technology to improve service delivery and convenience," he said.

He announced that SSNIT’s new virtual branch will go live this year, enabling members to access services 24/7 from any location. Additionally, SSNIT is in talks with three major banks to leverage their extensive branch networks to roll out between 25 and 50 new touchpoints by the end of the year, aiming to double its physical presence across Ghana without incurring major costs.

“We decided that to bring convenience to our members at the least cost, it was important to leverage partnerships. This is a strategic move to scale up quickly, efficiently, and sustainably,” Mr. Biney said. He encouraged members to utilize the SSNIT mobile app for self-onboarding using their Ghana Cards and facial recognition technology.

Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Mr. Biney addressed the national debate on the retirement age, noting that while life expectancy is rising, increasing the pension age to 65 should be approached cautiously, with due consideration for the country’s high unemployment rate. “Let’s have a broader conversation that looks at job opportunities for the youth as well,” he stressed.

Member of Parliament for Adentan, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, expressed excitement over the development, emphasizing that the branch would especially benefit self-employed individuals in the area. “SSNIT is not only promoting financial security but also reinforcing its role as a people-centered institution that understands the real needs of its members,” he stated.

He lauded the initiative as aligning with government’s broader inclusivity agenda and urged SSNIT to continue serving with excellence.

Also speaking at the ceremony was the Deputy CEO of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), representing the CEO, Dr. Christopher Boadi Mensah. He praised SSNIT for its unwavering commitment to decentralization and improved service delivery.

“This branch is more than a structure — it symbolizes progress, hope, and our shared vision of a dignified retirement for every Ghanaian worker,” he said, calling on SSNIT and NPRA to continue working together to improve coverage and financial sustainability of the pensions sector.

Welcoming guests, SSNIT General Manager Mr. Philip Kofi Senya reaffirmed the Trust’s dedication to its mission. “The Adentan branch represents another significant step in bringing our services closer to the people,” he said.

The new branch is expected to significantly improve access to SSNIT services in Adentan and neighboring communities, reinforcing SSNIT’s position as Ghana’s premier pension administrator.
