Korle Gonno Central SDA Sets Sanctuary Apart for God

The Korle Gonno Central Seventh-day Adventist Church has officially dedicated its church building to the glory of God, crowning decades of faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to the gospel mission.
The sacred dedication ceremony, held on the Sabbath, was led by Pastor Dr. Chris Annan-Nunoo, Pastor of the Korle Gonno Central SDA Church and Executive Secretary of the Southern Ghana Union Conference (SGUC), who described the occasion as a testimony to God’s faithfulness rather than the inauguration of a physical structure.
“Today, on this sacred Sabbath, we gather not to begin a new building, but to bear witness to God’s faithfulness,” Pastor Annan-Nunoo declared. “Though the structure before us already stands solid, complete, and beautiful, this dedication affirms what has always been true—Christ is the real foundation upon which this church is built.”
He emphasized that the dedication was not about chronology but conviction—a public declaration that behind every block laid, every resource contributed, and every sacrifice made, the unseen hand of God was at work.
Quoting Ellen G. White, he reminded the congregation: “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 8, p. 119), stressing that the sanctuary stands as evidence that the Lord Himself has built the house.
According to him, the church building is set apart for a higher purpose—to be a place where truth is preached, hearts are transformed, and souls are prepared for the Kingdom of God.
“Buildings alone do not fulfill God’s purpose; a consecrated people do,” he noted. “May this house be filled with prayer, worship, compassion, and unwavering faithfulness to the Word of God.”
The dedication was supported by top leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, including Pastor Dr. Solomon Okoe Trebi Hammond, the outgoing President of the Accra City Conference; Pastor Dr. Emmanuel Gaizer, Executive Secretary of the Accra City Conference; Elder Charles Kobina Anoo Gate, Treasurer of the Accra City Conference; Pastor Stephen Damptey, District Pastor; Pastor Dr. Timothy Yeboah, the newly elected President of the Accra City Conference; and Pastor Kerster G. T. Agbasi, the newly elected Executive Secretary of the Accra City Conference.
A Journey Rooted in Mission
The Korle Gonno Central SDA Church traces its roots to the establishment of the Hansen Road Seventh-day Adventist Church in Accra in 1941. As early members began settling across the Korle Lagoon, deliberate efforts were made to extend the proclamation of the Three Angels’ Message into Korle Gonno.
In 1962, residents of Korle Gonno worshipping at Hansen Road Church initiated a branch Sabbath School under the leadership of Elder Otu Apreku, Deacon Thomas Ateh Nunoo, and Teacher James Mensah Okai. Eleven years later, the church intensified its outreach through a house-to-house community programme dubbed “Share Your Faith.”
This was followed by a youth evangelistic campaign near the home of Madam Janet Tagoe, led by Elder J. J. Nortey, E. C. Tetteh, E. O. Sackey, and George Lartey, paving the way for a historic evangelistic breakthrough.
Keys to Health and Happiness
In August 1975, an American evangelism team from Pacific Union College, California, comprising Dr. John Staples, Professor of Religion, and Dr. Sherman Nagel, Professor of Biology, held the Keys to Health and Happiness Lectures at Argonauts Park (later Indafa Park) near the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The six-week campaign, which began on August 3, 1975, attracted the full support of the Hansen Road Church and resulted in the baptism of 56 souls on October 25, 1975, by Pastors R. Fidelia and S. K. Agyemang at the Labone SDA Church.
Organization and Growth
With support from Madam Gertrude Naa Shika Otoo, proprietor of the Unity Day Care Centre along the Old Winneba Road, the young congregation found a place of worship. In March 1976, under Pastor B. C. B. Debrah, the Korle Gonno Church was officially organized, becoming the fifth organized SDA church in Accra, with Pastor J. J. Nortey leading alongside Elders J. A. Bulley, V. K. Koumougah, and Pastor Japhet Agbokah.
In 1978, Nii Kpakpo Oti Vanderpuije, father of former Accra Mayor Hon. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, led the church to acquire its present land and an additional farmland at Medie.
The church continued to expand through evangelism, including the 1987 Amazing Facts campaign led by Pastor Joe Crews, which also gave birth to other congregations such as the Living Stream SDA Church.
Youth, Music, and Outreach
The church’s ministry flourished through music, youth leadership, and outreach, championed by pioneers such as Prof. W. W. Oblitey, Albert Adomako, J. P. K. Tetteh, Elder Antwi, Madam Florence Duncan, Pastor John Tetteh, and Elder Peter Acquah.
In 1987, Darius Quartey and Robert Acquah launched the Pathfinder Club, birthing the vibrant Coastal Crusaders. The church also distinguished itself through prison ministry at Ussher Fort and Nsawam Prisons, led by Elder Kwamina Jacobs, Elder John Ogoe, and committed youth.
Trials, Triumphs, and New Era
After displacement in 1997, worship under temporary structures, and years of perseverance, the church completed its roof in 2012 under Pastor E. Tchouchou, later benefiting from the ministry of Pastor George Opey. A new season of revival and growth began with the arrival of Pastor Dr. Chris Annan-Nunoo in 2016.
In 2019, the church was granted district status, officially becoming the Korle Gonno Central Seventh-day Adventist Church, with vibrant departments, growing membership, child evangelism, health outreach, and youth empowerment.
The dedication ceremony also honored elders who sustained the church during periods without a resident pastor, including Elder Joseph A. Nartey, Elder Alex Clarke, Elder W. W. Oblitey, Elder V. K. Koumougah, Elder Moses Thompson, Elder Stephen Kojo Foster, Elder John Ogoe, Elder J. P. K. Tetteh, Elder Philip Williams, Elder Samuel K. Abbey, and Elder Samuel Aryeetey.
As the sanctuary was dedicated, the congregation recommitted itself to God’s mission, praying that the church would stand not only as a physical landmark in Korle Gonno, but as a spiritual lighthouse—pointing many to Christ and preparing a people for His soon return.
