Greater Accra Minister Blasts Non-Performance MMDCEs
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo (MP), has issued a stern warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region, accusing many of them of inefficiency and complacency in discharging their duties.
Speaking at the “Meet the Press” encounter held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the Impartility Conference Hall of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), the Minister said she was disappointed at the lack of urgency shown by several MMDCEs, stressing that excuses will no longer be tolerated.
“Leadership is not about sitting in offices and enjoying perks. It is about delivering results, and right now, many of you are simply sleeping on the job,” she charged.
The engagement, part of the government’s “Reset Agenda”, focused on three critical issues: streetlights, sanitation, and billboard regulation.
On streetlights, Hon. Ocloo announced that the Ministry of Energy had secured 3,000 new units, with each assembly set to receive 100 pieces. She gave MMDCEs a two-week ultimatum to fix them, warning that defaulters would be exposed and reported.
Turning to sanitation, she described the state of cleanliness in the region as “unacceptable,” accusing assemblies of neglect despite having resources under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). “The stench, the filth, the choked drains are a reflection of your failure to lead. The era of excuses is over,” she said, adding that non-performing MMDCEs risk removal from office.
On illegal billboards and the theft of drain covers, she directed assemblies to step up enforcement and collaborate with the Police, stressing that leadership requires initiative and not laziness.
The Minister also raised concerns about the misuse of Personal Assistants (PAs) in assemblies, warning that they must not assume official responsibilities such as writing speeches, approving documents, or representing MMDCEs. She further condemned the conversion of official offices into political party meeting grounds, describing it as an abuse of office.
Addressing environmental issues, Hon. Ocloo vowed that the RCC, with relevant agencies, would intensify demolitions at the Sakumo Ramsar site and halt the ongoing illegal filling of the Laloi Lagoon in Ningo-Prampram. She described such acts as reckless and devastating to biodiversity and flood management.
In conclusion, the Minister emphasized that her assessment of MMDCEs will be based on sanitation, streetlights, and by-law enforcement, with findings forwarded to the Ministry of Local Government and the Presidency. She also urged residents to support efforts by reporting faulty streetlights, avoiding indiscriminate dumping, and protecting public infrastructure.
“The people of this region are tired of words; they want results, and they want them now,” she declared.
