Akandoh Assures Support Amid Campus COVID Resurgence

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reiterated government’s commitment to managing the recent COVID-19 resurgence in Ghana, following a working visit to the University of Ghana Health Services and Medical Centre in Accra.

The visit formed part of efforts to obtain first-hand information about the outbreak and reinforce collaboration between government health agencies and tertiary institutions. During the visit, Mr. Akandoh expressed satisfaction that the recent spike in cases within the university community appears to be under control.

“It’s good to hear that the spike has been well contained,” the Minister said. “COVID is still with us, and I want to assure you that our resolve to tackle it remains firm. Let’s improve collaboration and avoid communication gaps that can lead to misinformation and panic.”

Accompanied by officials from the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health, the Minister also visited the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), where he was briefed on suspected cases. Authorities there indicated that no COVID-19 cases had been confirmed at UGMC, although vigilance remains high.

Health workers at the university’s facilities were observed strictly adhering to COVID-19 protocols, fully dressed in protective gear while students complied with mask-wearing regulations. The Ministry donated personal protective equipment, including sanitizers and face masks, to support containment efforts.

University management reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate with national health authorities. Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gordon Awandare disclosed that 107 COVID-19 cases have so far been confirmed from 316 suspected cases, with no hospitalizations or deaths recorded. He attributed the outbreak to a large student social event and said preventive measures, including the suspension of social gatherings, were yielding results.

“The data shows that the outbreak is declining, and the positivity rate is low,” Prof. Awandare stated.

The Health Minister used the occasion to stress the importance of rapid response, clear communication, and breaking bureaucratic barriers in dealing with such public health issues, promising continued support from the government.
