TH4D Calls for Support for Disability Sports

In a bold and inspiring move to promote inclusivity and celebrate the abilities of persons with disabilities (PWDs), the non-governmental organization Talent Hour for Persons with Disabilities (TH4D) has launched the Amputee Soccer Regional Tour as part of activities to mark the 2025 National Disability Day.

The official launch event, held at New Achimota Mile 7 in Accra, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the National Council of Persons with Disabilities, the National Paralympic Committee, and members of the Ghana National Amputee Football Team.

The tour, scheduled to begin on October 4 and conclude on December 3—World Disability Day—will take place across six regional capitals and their surroundings. It aims to create platforms for talented amputee footballers to showcase their skills, challenge stigma, and drive the growth of disability sports nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Samuel Obeng Ansah, Founder of TH4D and Treasurer of the Ghana Amputee League Clubs Association, highlighted the need for sustainable support for disability sports. He recalled the success of Ghana's first amputee league in 2018, which could not be sustained due to financial constraints.

He made an emotional appeal to government and corporate bodies to step in with sponsorship and funding, noting that “disability does not mean inability.” He emphasized that the regional tour will not only uncover hidden talent but also serve as a catalyst for long-term investment in disability sports.

Executive Director of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Edward Kwaku Andoh, praised the tour as a beacon of hope and inclusion. He called on stakeholders to support amputee football as a tool for social transformation.

President of the National Paralympic Committee, Mr. Samson Deen, lauded the initiative and pledged the committee’s support in terms of administration and technical expertise. He called for broad-based backing to ensure the tour succeeds.

Captain of Ghana’s National Amputee Football Team, Richard Arthur Opentil, endorsed the campaign, urging President John Dramani Mahama and Sports Minister Alfred Kofi Adams to provide long-overdue recognition and rewards to the national team. He encouraged youth living with disabilities, especially those on the streets, to see amputee soccer as a path to dignity and achievement.

With hopes high and momentum building, organizers believe the Amputee Soccer Regional Tour could mark a turning point in the fight for inclusion, representation, and opportunity for Ghana’s disabled community.
