Sunyani Technical Gets Government Backing for Development Plans

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged the government’s commitment to addressing the infrastructure and academic development challenges facing Sunyani Technical University. Speaking at the inauguration of the university’s Governing Council on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Iddrisu congratulated the new council members and urged them to bring their experience and leadership to bear on the institution’s progress.

“The future of our country hinges on training young people in science, mathematics, and engineering,” the Minister stated, adding that Sunyani Technical University, formerly Sunyani Polytechnic, remains one of the earliest institutions converted into a technical university with a strong mandate in electrical and electronic engineering.

He praised the university for its strict compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), describing it as one of the few institutions that continue to uphold such excellence.

Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged the university’s desire to expand into pre-engineering programs and urged GTEC to collaborate with the university to realize that vision. He also addressed the university’s pressing infrastructure deficit, which he witnessed firsthand during an earlier visit.

“I wasn’t excited at all, looking at the state of your infrastructure,” the Minister confessed. “It only reminded me of the urgent need to support the university with lecture theatres and student accommodation.”

He revealed that he had already requested the Administrator of the GETFund to prioritize the completion of uncompleted buildings on campus and had further proposed to the President that infrastructure investment under the proposed “Big Push” should include educational institutions, not just roads.

The Minister further noted that while access to senior high school has expanded, Ghana’s universities were not equally prepared for the resulting student population growth. He assured the Governing Council of the government’s intention to provide the needed support, including ongoing efforts to secure grants such as those from the Italian government.

Mr. Iddrisu also highlighted his correspondence with the Ministry of Roads, requesting the design of dedicated campus road infrastructure for universities nationwide.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to the Governing Council members for accepting to serve and emphasized that their leadership will be critical to the transformation of Sunyani Technical University.
