Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire Power Project

In a significant move toward deepening regional energy integration, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the 330 kV Double Circuit Interconnection Reinforcement Project between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. The announcement came during a high-level ministerial meeting held on June 27, 2025, in Accra.

Hon. Gyan-Mensah, delivering a speech on behalf of the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, welcomed delegates from Côte d’Ivoire and partner institutions, praising the project as a “strategic initiative” vital for enhancing grid stability, operational reliability, and cross-border electricity trade within the West African Power Pool (WAPP) framework.

The meeting marked a crucial phase in the project, which includes the review of updated technical findings, discussion of institutional governance frameworks, and environmental and social impact assessments. It also featured the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish two key governance bodies:

1. Joint Technical Steering Committee – Co-chaired by the CEOs of GRIDCo and CI-Energies, to supervise the technical implementation.

2. Interstate Committee – Chaired by energy ministers from both countries, to provide political and strategic oversight.

“These institutional mechanisms will ensure effective coordination, accountability, and transparency,” Hon. Gyan-Mensah noted.

He commended the World Bank for its financial support, the WAPP Secretariat for its coordination role, and the technical teams from both nations for their collaborative dedication.

“This project reflects the deepening cooperation between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and aligns with our shared vision for a resilient and integrated regional energy system,” he emphasized.

Participants at the meeting were urged to contribute actively to ensure a smooth implementation that benefits not only Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire but the broader ECOWAS region.

The Deputy Minister concluded with warm wishes for productive discussions and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to a greener, connected energy future.
