We Will Resist Any Attempt to Arrest Naa Sheriga – MAYA Warns Government
The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has issued a strong warning against any attempt by the government or parties involved in the Bawku conflict to arrest or remove Bawku Naba, Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre.
At a press conference held today, the Association cautioned that such actions would be met with fierce resistance and would further escalate tensions in the already volatile region.
MAYA described recent calls by some Kusasi factions for the arrest of Naa Sheriga as “unfounded, provocative, and a direct threat to the peace process” in Bawku, a conflict-prone area with a complex history of chieftaincy disputes.
Reaffirming the legitimacy of Naa Sheriga’s enskinment by the Nayiri, the Kingmaker of Mamprugu, the Association condemned attempts to undermine his authority, describing them as unlawful and disrespectful to longstanding traditions.
“This matter is not subject to tribal sentiments or public debate – the Court of Appeal has already affirmed Naa Sheriga’s legitimacy. Any attempt to arrest him would amount to contempt of court and a violation of his fundamental rights,” the statement emphasized.
MAYA also accused Kusasi youth of engaging in what they described as “ethnic profiling and economic blockade,” alleging that Mamprusi communities are being denied access to markets, attacked while traveling, and experiencing disruptions in state services.
“These actions are undermining the ongoing peace efforts spearheaded by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” the group stated.
The Association reiterated its commitment to peace under the guidance of the Nayiri but called on the government to act with fairness and neutrality.
“Our resolve is strong, and our patience must not be mistaken for weakness,” MAYA concluded, urging the government to uphold justice and restore law and order in the area.
