CDD-Ghana Unveils Shocking 2024 Election Incident Report
The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has revealed findings on incidents recorded during the 2024 general elections, citing a total of 76 separate cases. These incidents were disclosed at a press conference by Nana Kwabena Aborampah Mensah, Senior Programs Officer at CDD-Ghana.
The breakdown includes 24 cases of destruction, seizure, vandalism, and invasion of public facilities. For instance, ballot papers and pink sheets were destroyed at collation centers, and Electoral Commission offices in Damongo and Ayensuano Constituencies were set ablaze.
Six deaths were reported, including the shooting of Haruna Shaibu, a 31-year-old steel bender, at the Nyankpala lorry station in the Tolon Constituency. Another victim, Mukila Ziblim, died from a stray bullet in Damongo during collation.
Additionally, 46 injuries were recorded, with three individuals in critical condition. Notable incidents include Abdul Aziz Wunpini’s hospitalization following the Nyankpala clashes and Richard Taboh’s thigh injury from a shooting at Nsawam.
Plans Moving Forward
In collaboration with WANEP, CODEO, and NERG platforms, CDD-Ghana aims to validate data on these incidents through regional follow-ups and engagement with victims, families, and security officers. A robust tracking mechanism will monitor cases through the justice system, with CODEO volunteers filing monthly reports.
Victim platforms will be established to foster communication between investigators and affected families, ensuring transparency and support for ongoing investigations.
Action by the National Election Security Task Force (NESTF)
So far, 132 suspects have been arrested, with 45 remanded, 71 granted police enquiry bail, and 16 on court bail. The task force will provide periodic updates on the cases to keep the public informed.
