International Scouts and Guides Fellowship Champions Peaceful Elections

In a remarkable demonstration of unity and patriotism, Scout and Guide Fellowship Ghana (SGF-Gh), in partnership with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, organized Peace Gathering 2024 (PG 2024)  to promote peace and unity ahead of Ghana’s December 7 general elections.

The event, which climaxed with a grand gathering, featured a seven-day walk that commenced at the Manhyia Palace and extended through various towns. The President of the Fellowship, Mr. Andrew Botchwey, revealed during the climax that the initiative was designed to sensitize communities on the importance of maintaining peace during the election period.

“Walking is something we do every year, but because this year is an election year, we wanted to make a significant impact and remind Ghanaians that the Scouts and Guides Fellowship is alive and committed to Ghana’s well-being,” Mr. Botchwey stated.

He explained that the group engaged with communities along the route, educating people about the purpose of the walk and urging them to avoid violence during the elections. Despite facing minor challenges, such as muscle strains and traffic, the team’s spirits remained high, thanks to the support of private security personnel, military officers, and regional scouts who joined them at various points.

The Peace Walk underscored the group’s message of unity, with Mr. Botchwey reminding Ghanaians of the importance of safeguarding the nation’s peace. “Ghana is our only home. If anything happens, where will we go? All neighboring countries are French-speaking, and we don’t know how to swim across the sea,” he remarked humorously.

He also called on the youth to reject violence and resist being used by politicians for selfish gains. “Go to the polls, vote peacefully, and return home. If politicians offer you money, take it, vote wisely, and go home to sleep,” he advised.

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, commended the organizers for their efforts to ensure peace before, during, and after the elections. He appealed to the youth to uphold Ghana’s longstanding reputation for peace and avoid acts that could destabilize the country.

The Peace Walk 2024 left a lasting impression on Ghanaians, showcasing a shared commitment to a peaceful election season.
