Public Interest Mounts as Second Lady’s Family Named in East Legon Demolition Case

The ongoing court case surrounding the recent demolition of ten houses in East Legon has taken a new twist, as the family of Ghana’s Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, has been revealed to have ties to the property in question. Property owner George Oti Bonsu filed a contempt case against Hajia Aisha Ahmed, who was represented in court by her attorney-in-fact, Charles Edem Adogodo, after the contentious demolition incident.

In previous weeks, representatives of Samira Bawumia's family denied any involvement in the demolition. However, during a hearing on October 26, 2024, defense attorney Kofi Abotsi confirmed that Hajia Aisha Ahmed, the respondent, is indeed the mother of the Second Lady. This revelation has added a significant layer to the case, fueling speculation about the family’s role in the property dispute and the demolition.

The issue of Hajia Aisha Ahmed’s attendance was raised in court by Elikplim Agbamava, lawyer for the applicant Mr. Oti Bonsu, who noted her absence from court proceedings. In response, defense lawyer Abotsi explained that, as the wife of Ghana's ambassador to the UAE, Hajia Ahmed is often abroad, limiting her ability to attend hearings.

The confirmation of Hajia Aisha Ahmed’s family connection has drawn heightened public interest, especially given the involvement of prominent figures linked to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Many are now questioning prior statements that distanced the Second Lady's family from the demolition, as the court case unfolds in Tema High Court.

The next contempt hearing is set for November 13, 2024, as Ghanaians anticipate further updates on this high-profile case.
