Penplusbytes Unveils Voters’ Compass and Hosts Policy Dialogue to Strengthen Electoral Transparency

Penplusbytes, a leading organization focused on technology and governance, has launched an innovative digital tool, the Voters' Compass, aimed at enhancing electoral transparency and accountability ahead of Ghana’s 2024 elections. The launch, which took place during a Policy Dialogue event under the theme “Do Manifestos Matter?”, brought together political party representatives, civil society organizations, youth groups, and academics for discussions on manifesto promises and their impact on national development.

In his opening remarks, Jerry Sam, Executive Director of Penplusbytes, emphasized the importance of shifting political discourse away from personality-driven politics and focusing on policy-based discussions. He highlighted that manifestos, despite being at the heart of political campaigns, often face a disconnect with voters, particularly the youth, who question the feasibility of promises and the political will to follow through.

The Voters' Compass, developed in partnership with the German platform VoteSwiper, seeks to bridge this gap by providing a tool that allows citizens, especially young and first-time voters, to compare political party positions on key policy areas. By enabling voters to assess and track manifesto commitments post-elections, the tool promotes a culture of accountability and empowers citizens to make informed decisions when casting their votes.

The Policy Dialogue, part of Penplusbytes’ African Elections Project, is designed to foster open, constructive discussions between political leaders, civil society, and the youth. The series aims to ensure that manifestos are not just campaign promises but become actionable commitments that shape governance in Ghana.

The event was supported by the German Federal Office under the IFA zivik Funding Programme and marks a critical step in Ghana’s democratic journey, focusing on strengthening transparency and accountability in political processes through technology and civic engagement.

Participants at the event expressed optimism that the Voters' Compass would serve as a powerful tool in fostering informed democratic participation and tracking manifesto promises after the elections, thereby deepening Ghana's democratic culture.
