Over 400 Journalists Trained for Non-Partisan Reporting as GJA Warns Against Media Attacks
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Duffour, has emphasized the crucial role of journalists in ensuring a peaceful and credible 2024 election in Ghana.
Speaking at the GJA/US Embassy Workshop on Peaceful Journalistic Discourse at the Coconut Grove Hotel, Mr. Duffour highlighted the success of the recent training sessions held across the country.
These sessions he indicated was organized in collaboration with the US Embassy, trained over 400 journalists on promoting non-partisan and fact-based election reporting.
The workshops, which took place in five zones, including regions such as the Volta, Northern, Ashanti, and Western regions, brought together key stakeholders like the Electoral Commission, National Media Commission, and the Ghana Police Service. The primary focus was on equipping journalists with the tools to foster peaceful discourse ahead of the 2024 elections.
Mr. Duffour commended the US Embassy for its unwavering commitment to media development and freedom of the press in Ghana. He also expressed concern about the increasing intolerance and attacks against the media, warning that the GJA would not tolerate any assault on journalists during the election period.
As the country prepares for a highly anticipated and potentially tense election, Mr. Duffour called on journalists to uphold their responsibilities, promoting discussion of policy issues while protecting the space for peaceful discourse.
He also reiterated the GJA's dedication to defending its members and the importance of media freedom for the country's democracy and future.
