Schoolchildren Support MahamaCares with GH¢8,000
Pupils of Mothercare School in Accra have touched hearts after donating GHC8,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) in response to nationwide calls for support to strengthen specialist healthcare in the country.
Accompanied by the school’s management, the pupils visited the premises of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund on Friday, December 12, 2025, requesting the opportunity to contribute to the fund and demonstrate their commitment to supporting the sick and vulnerable.
The donation was raised through the pupils’ weekly Wednesday morning devotion offerings, saved consistently throughout the year. According to the children, the gesture was motivated by their desire to support MahamaCares and help save lives, even if they may never meet the beneficiaries.
Leading the delegation, the Principal of Mothercare School, Madam Peace Abasah Addo, explained that the donation represented the collective sacrifice of the pupils.
“What we are doing today is from the little coins learners offer during our Wednesday school worship. We put everything together to reach out to the vulnerable. This is our widow’s mite, and we pray it gives someone life one day,” she said.
She added that instilling compassion and generosity in children is a core value of the school, noting that Mothercare School undertakes outreach activities annually, especially in December.
“We always look for opportunities to support the less privileged. This year, we decided to respond to the call from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund,” she noted.
Receiving the donation, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Ms. Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, described the gesture as love in action.
“This is not just a contribution; it is compassion, hope and kindness gathered one morning at a time by children who want to support a Ghanaian they may never meet,” she said.
Ms. Darko-Opoku praised the school for nurturing values such as empathy, responsibility and social consciousness among the pupils, noting that such acts help build balanced and compassionate future leaders.
She expressed gratitude to the school’s management for guiding the children to respond to the Fund’s appeal for support.
“I am overwhelmed. These little drops of water will one day make a mighty ocean. I call on other schools and institutions to emulate this gesture and support this worthy cause,” she appealed.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, an initiative of President John Dramani Mahama, was established to provide financial support for Ghanaians suffering from serious and costly chronic illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure and heart disease that are not fully covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The Fund seeks to bridge gaps in specialised healthcare delivery, strengthen health infrastructure, and prevent families from slipping into poverty due to high medical treatment costs.
