New Fund Proposal Boosts Media Sustainability Efforts
The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has commended the Government of Ghana for its proposal to establish a National Media Fund, describing the initiative as timely, strategic, and vital to strengthening the country’s media landscape.
According to PRINPAG, the announcement comes at a crucial period when many media organisations—especially smaller and privately owned outlets—are struggling under rising operational costs, declining advertising revenue, limited training opportunities, and increasing sustainability challenges. These constraints, the Association stressed, pose a real threat to media independence, diversity, and long-term survival.PRINPAG expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his renewed commitment to media development, recalling that he first introduced the idea of a national media support mechanism during his earlier administration. Although the initiative was not fully realized before 2016, the Association believes his return to leadership provides an opportunity to finally operationalize this long-envisioned support system.
The Association has urged the government to fast-track the processes required to establish and activate the Fund to ensure that journalists and media institutions nationwide receive timely assistance.
To ensure transparency, credibility, and effective management, PRINPAG is recommending that the Media Development Fund be built on strong governance structures, including an independent board, a dedicated secretariat, and a qualified Fund Administrator. The Association believes such mechanisms will safeguard the independence of the Fund and guarantee that support reaches the media organisations most in need.
PRINPAG further called on development partners, civil society organisations, the private sector, and the general public to rally behind this national effort, emphasizing that a strong and independent media is essential to sustaining democracy, enhancing accountability, and promoting national development.
The Association reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with government and stakeholders in building a resilient, vibrant, and sustainable media environment.
The statement was signed by PRINPAG President David Tamakloe and the Public Affairs & External Relations Officer, Emmanuel Opare Djan.
