Health Ministry Deploys 700 Doctors to Rural Areas
The Ministry of Health has rolled out a nationwide programme to strengthen healthcare delivery through the distribution of essential medical equipment and the redeployment of doctors to underserved communities.
Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister for Health, made this known during a visit to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he presented new anesthesia machines and interacted with hospital leadership.
According to the Minister, the government has begun distributing 50 anesthesia machines to health facilities across the country, with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital receiving eight machines and UGMC three in the first phase. The initiative, he said, forms part of government’s broader commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that medical facilities are adequately equipped to deliver quality care.
“We are determined to ensure that every health facility in Ghana, whether in the city or the countryside, has the right tools to save lives and provide the best possible care,” Hon. Akandoh stated.
In a move to address the shortage of medical professionals in rural and district hospitals, the Minister announced the redeployment of over 700 medical doctors, with 80% expected to be posted to district hospitals and underserved areas. To encourage doctors to accept these postings, the government will provide incentives including preferential access to specialist training opportunities and other professional benefits.
Hon. Akandoh further revealed that the Ministry is partnering with the private sector to ensure hospitals across the country are adequately resourced with modern equipment and skilled personnel. “Public-private collaboration is key to bridging the gap in healthcare delivery and building a more resilient health system,” he emphasized.
Addressing concerns about the impact of the presidential directive on the retirement of public servants, the Minister assured that critical healthcare staff would be granted exceptions to continue serving beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 when necessary, to prevent disruptions in essential services.
Hon. Akandoh reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery nationwide, describing the equipment distribution and doctor redeployment as practical steps toward achieving equitable and accessible healthcare for all Ghanaians.
“These measures will not only enhance service delivery but also strengthen confidence in our healthcare system and ensure that no community is left behind,” he concluded.
