GRA Investigates Alleged Extortion by Ashanti Customs Officers
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has begun a full-scale investigation into allegations of extortion involving some officers of the Customs Division Task Force operating in the Ashanti Region.
The move follows claims by the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) that certain Customs officers intercepted containers heading to Kumasi and allegedly demanded additional payments from an importer after accusing him of undervaluing his goods. TAGG described the payments as unjustified and said the conduct of the officers amounted to extortion.
In a statement issued from the GRA Head Office on Starlets ’91 Street in Accra on Thursday, November 27, 2025, the Authority said it takes the allegations seriously and has launched an internal probe to establish the facts.
According to the GRA, the investigation will be thorough, and the public will be updated once it is completed. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining integrity and transparency across all its operations, emphasizing that misconduct by any officer will not be tolerated.
The GRA also encouraged traders, importers, and members of the public to report suspected malpractices through its official reporting channels to help strengthen accountability within the system.
