Gender Ministry Orders Swift Action Over Child Abuse Footage
The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has condemned a disturbing video circulating on social media showing a group of men forcing a young child to smoke a cigarette. The Ministry described the act as abusive, unlawful, and a grave violation of the child’s rights.
According to the Ministry, exposing a child to harmful substances constitutes child endangerment and directly contravenes the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), which guarantees every child protection from physical, psychological, and moral harm. The act also undermines national efforts under the Early Childhood Care and Development Policy, which promotes safe, nurturing environments for holistic child development.
In a swift response, the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection has forwarded the video to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for immediate action. The Ministry has urged the police to expedite investigations, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure they face the full rigour of the law.
The incident comes at a time when the world is marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that calls for intensified action to protect vulnerable groups, especially women and children.
The Ministry reminded parents, guardians, caregivers, traditional leaders, religious institutions, and civil society groups of their collective responsibility to safeguard children from all forms of abuse and harmful practices. It stressed that the video is a stark reminder of the urgent need for stronger community vigilance and child protection efforts.
“Protecting the rights and dignity of children is a collective responsibility,” the Ministry emphasized.
