Advisory Board Inaugurated to Drive Health Sector Reforms
The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated the newly constituted Ministerial Advisory Board of the Ministry of Health, pledging renewed commitment to teamwork, accountability, and innovation in advancing Ghana’s health agenda.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held in Accra, the Minister described the formation of the Board as a critical step toward strengthening policy formulation, refining priorities, and monitoring progress in the health sector. He urged members to uphold integrity, teamwork, and shared purpose in carrying out their duties.
“We stand at a transformative moment in our health sector, marked by renewed hope and clear direction under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,” he said. “The government’s health vision is anchored on expanding access, improving quality, and ensuring financial protection for every Ghanaian.”
Hon. Akandoh highlighted flagship initiatives such as the Free Primary Health Care Policy—a key step toward universal health coverage—and the Mahama CARES Program, which aims to expand access to specialist care across all regions. The Minister further noted that these programs complement the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, which focuses on sustainable financing for non-communicable disease treatment and specialist service delivery.
He called on the Board to work collaboratively to address challenges such as health workforce shortages, infrastructure gaps, and emerging disease burdens. “Our success will depend not only on the brilliance of individual members but on our ability to work together with unity of purpose,” he stressed.
In his welcome address, Mr. Desmond Boateng, Chief Director at the Ministry of Health, described the Advisory Board as a vital platform for promoting transparency, accountability, and participatory governance. He emphasized that the Board’s establishment, mandated under the Civil Service Act, 1993 (PNDCL 327) and L.I. 1649, provides strategic guidance to ensure policies are evidence-based and responsive to national priorities.
Mr. Boateng commended the Minister’s leadership and expressed appreciation to the Board members for accepting the call to serve, adding that their collective experience will be instrumental in achieving equitable and quality health care for all Ghanaians.
Hon. Akandoh concluded by urging the members to move forward “in unity, in purpose, and in service to the health and well-being of our nation.”
