Minister Orders Probe into Lawra SHS Drowning

The Ministry of Education has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of seven students from Lawra Senior High School who drowned in the Black Volta River on the morning of Saturday, June 15, 2025. The heartbreaking incident occurred during a routine jogging exercise by the school’s cadet corps, ending in devastation when ten students reportedly attempted to cross the river into Burkina Faso using a canoe near Dikpe, a border community.

In a distressing turn of events, the canoe capsized midstream, claiming the lives of five girls and two boys. Three students miraculously survived the ordeal. A swift joint rescue operation by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Education Service led to the retrieval of all seven bodies.

An official statement issued by the Ministry and signed by Deputy Minister Dr. Clement Abas Apaak confirmed the details and conveyed the Ministry’s sympathies. “We share in the grief of the affected families and the entire school community,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this extremely difficult time.”

In response to the tragedy, Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to convene an emergency meeting with regional and district education directors and the headmaster of Lawra SHS. The objective is to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and reinforce safety measures in schools nationwide.

The Ministry has reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of all students and indicated that it is awaiting a full report from the Ghana Police Service to determine the next course of action.
