Islamic Medical School Proposed for Northern Ghana
Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has appealed to the Qatar Education Foundation to partner with the government to establish an Islamic Medical School in the Northern Region. The proposed institution is expected to serve both as a center for advanced medical training and as a teaching hospital for the University for Development Studies (UDS).
The initiative, according to Hon. Iddrisu, forms part of a broader plan to increase access to medical education, reduce regional disparities in healthcare delivery, and provide professional opportunities for young people in underserved communities.
“This school will help the umma in the north and serve as a beacon of hope for inclusive healthcare education. If you can give us friendly concessionary financing, we can make it a reality,” Hon. Iddrisu stated during a meeting with the Qatari Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Khalid Bin Jabor Al-Mesallam.
The meeting in Accra marked a significant step in ongoing bilateral engagements between Ghana and Qatar, with both countries exploring new frontiers of cooperation in education. Hon. Iddrisu reiterated Ghana’s desire to deepen institutional ties between their respective education ministries and expand opportunities for knowledge exchange, curriculum development, and investment.
The Minister further announced plans to review the Islamic curriculum in Ghana’s basic education sector, starting from kindergarten, to promote Arabic language instruction and align with global best practices in Islamic education.
He also shared Ghana’s readiness to participate in the upcoming Global Education Conference in Geneva in September 2025, where the country hopes to showcase its education sector priorities and innovations on the world stage.
Ambassador Al-Mesallam expressed Qatar’s strong interest in the proposed collaboration and affirmed the country's commitment to advancing mutual goals in education.
This diplomatic engagement underscores Ghana’s commitment to leveraging international partnerships to enhance educational equity and drive national development.
