High Court Halts Ongoing Nurses’ Industrial Action

The Accra High Court has issued an injunction restraining the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) from continuing its ongoing nationwide strike, which commenced on June 4, 2025. The legal action was initiated by the National Labour Commission (NLC) following concerns over the disruption to healthcare services across the country.

The strike, spearheaded by the GRNMA, has significantly strained the delivery of healthcare, as nurses and midwives protest the delayed implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement. The agreement, which outlines improved conditions of service, remains unfulfilled months into the year.

In a twist to the unfolding labour standoff, four unions have distanced themselves from the strike. According to these unions, a consensus was reached during a joint meeting on May 27, 2025, to hold off on any industrial action until after a scheduled engagement with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. They have criticized GRNMA’s decision to proceed with the strike, calling it unilateral and contrary to the collective understanding.

Despite the court's decision, GRNMA representatives claim they are unaware of any injunction order, raising further tensions about the legitimacy and communication surrounding the ruling.

As the standoff continues, the Ministry of Health has urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and the wellbeing of patients while legal and labour processes unfold.
