GIS Convicts Nigerian Over Online Scam Syndicate
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully secured the conviction of a Nigerian national, Mr. Promise Ebuorbo, who was arrested for harboring irregular migrants and residing illegally in Ghana.
Mr. Ebuorbo was apprehended at Sampa Valley, Weija, along with four other Nigerian nationals, following a tip-off that led GIS operatives to a rented apartment where ten young men were allegedly being housed for the purpose of engaging in online fraud schemes.
According to GIS investigations, Mr. Ebuorbo played a central role in facilitating the illegal stay of the individuals and organizing their involvement in internet-based scams, which defrauded unsuspecting victims of substantial sums of money.
He was subsequently charged and sentenced to 12 months in prison, in addition to a fine of 50 penalty units. His four accomplices were also convicted and fined 100 penalty units each.
The Ghana Immigration Service has once again reminded landlords and property owners to ensure they verify the immigration status of their tenants. GIS warns that offering accommodation to individuals without legal residency constitutes a punishable offence under Ghana’s immigration laws.
In a statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration, M. Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs, the Service reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on transnational crimes and irregular migration, in collaboration with other security agencies and international partners.
The GIS urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious migrant activity to the authorities.
