Dr. Yaa Osei Urges Youth to Embrace Agribusiness
Chief Executive Officer of Feedico Ghana Limited, Chief Nathaniel Ebo Nsarko, has unveiled a Comprehensive Implementation Roadmap to train and empower young poultry and livestock farmers across all 16 regions of Ghana, reinforcing the government's agenda of using agriculture as a catalyst for economic transformation.
The roadmap was officially launched at the premises of the Feedico Poultry and Animal Feed Centre in Adentan under the theme: "Empowering Youth, Securing Livelihoods: Advancing Ghana’s Poultry and Livestock Future Through Agribusiness Innovation."
The initiative, a collaborative effort between Feedico, the Animal Research Institute (ARI), and other strategic partners, is being rolled out under the Presidential Initiatives on Agriculture and Agribusiness, with the Office of the President providing overarching strategic coordination.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Nsarko emphasized the urgent need to equip Ghanaian youth with practical agribusiness skills to drive the poultry and livestock sector forward. “This roadmap is not just a training program—it is a transformational tool for job creation, food security, and sustainable livelihoods,” he stated.
The National Livestock and Poultry Training Program aims to empower 10,000 youth by 2030 and improve Ghana’s poultry meat self-sufficiency from the current 20% to at least 50% in five years. The initiative also seeks to integrate youth into various agribusiness value chains including hatcheries, feed production, veterinary services, and marketing.
The training will cover poultry (broilers, layers, indigenous breeds), pig farming, small ruminants (goats and sheep), cattle (dairy and beef), feed formulation, animal health, biosecurity, and agribusiness skills. Each regional rollout will be tailored to suit specific ecological and market conditions, ensuring local relevance and impact.
Components of the program include classroom instruction, farm demonstrations, mentorship by experienced agripreneurs, provision of starter kits, and linkage to digital marketplaces and institutional buyers.
Chief Nsarko described the initiative as “a strategic tool to reduce Ghana’s reliance on poultry imports, boost youth employment, and enhance national food sovereignty.”
The roadmap's first training session will begin in Greater Accra on July 28, 2025, followed by Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Central, and Upper West regions in a phased rollout extending into 2026. The Animal Research Institute will lead training content development and monitoring, while Feedico will support with technical expertise, feed training, and logistics.
This flagship agribusiness training program is designed to redefine agriculture as a dignified and profitable venture for Ghana’s youth, while aligning with national food security and industrialization strategies.
