Ghana Cracks Down on Foreign Street Beggars

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has commenced the repatriation of 2,241 foreign nationals arrested for engaging in street begging in Accra and other major cities.

As of Saturday, 18th May 2025, a total of 925 individuals—comprising 819 Nigeriens and 106 Nigerians—have been successfully repatriated. The remaining individuals, mainly from Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali, are still undergoing processing at designated holding centres.

GIS officials say the repatriation process was delayed due to thorough profiling, security screening, and adherence to international standards, including gender and age segregation. Medical and basic needs have been provided to the detainees, with the GIS Clinic on standby for health-related support.

To avoid overcrowding at the GIS National Headquarters Holding Centre, arrests have been temporarily suspended.

Management emphasized that the Special Operation is being conducted with full respect for human rights and international best practices. The Service expressed appreciation to the public and media for their support and urged continued collaboration.

The exercise, aimed at removing beggars and dismantling related criminal networks, will resume shortly as part of efforts to enhance national security and maintain order in public spaces.
