Mahama Launches Ambitious Feed Ghana Programme to Transform Agriculture

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Feed Ghana Programme in Techiman, Bono East Region, as part of his broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA). The initiative aims to reset Ghana’s agricultural sector through a strategic focus on food security, job creation, agro-industrial growth, and rural development.

In his address, Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s $2 billion annual food import bill and rising food inflation demand urgent, coordinated action. The Feed Ghana Programme, he stated, is not just a development project but a national economic engine designed to modernize agriculture, boost local production, and reduce dependence on imports.

The programme prioritizes grains, legumes, vegetables, livestock, starchy staples, and industrial tree crops. It introduces major interventions including SMART agriculture through Farmers’ Service Centres, revitalization of the poultry sector under the "Nkoko Nketenkete" initiative, institutional farming, and vegetable development through the "YƐREDUA" project.

Mahama also highlighted plans to promote backyard poultry, empower agripreneurs through land banks and irrigation, and support tree crop expansion under the "Feed the Industry" initiative. Agro-processing enclaves, concessional financing, and improved coordination will anchor the implementation strategy.

Institutions like the National Service Scheme, prisons, schools, faith-based organizations, and universities are already partnering to roll out the programme. Mahama stressed that the success of Feed Ghana hinges on strong collaboration between government, private sector, development partners, and farmers.

Declaring the programme officially launched, Mahama called on all Ghanaians to “put their shoulders to the wheel” to build a resilient, food-secure future.
