IGP Ordered to Replace Ineffective Anti-Galamsey Commanders
The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately transfer all regional, divisional, and district police commanders stationed in mining areas across Ghana. This directive is part of a broader strategy aimed at intensifying the fight against illegal mining, which continues to ravage the country’s environment and water resources.
According to the minister, officers who have served in mining regions for extended periods without yielding significant results in combating illegal mining will be replaced. The move is intended to introduce fresh leadership that can effectively address the menace.
Under the new policy, the transferred commanders will be reassigned to non-mining areas, while the newly appointed officers will undergo a three-month probationary period. Those who fail to demonstrate progress in curbing illegal mining within this timeframe will also face transfer.
Speaking during an engagement with Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak affirmed his commitment to implementing the directive despite growing calls for the IGP to reconsider. He reiterated that the government would continue to rotate commanders until substantial progress is made in addressing illegal mining.
“We will keep making changes until we see results,” the minister emphasized, highlighting the government’s determination to tackle illegal mining head-on by ensuring that police leadership in affected areas is both accountable and results-driven.
