Ghana Launches Ambitious Feed Ghana Programme

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku at a press conference leading to the official launch of Feed Ghana Programme (FGP) said, the ambitious initiative is aimed at transforming Ghana's agricultural sector.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Minister highlighted the programme's goal to reduce food imports, boost local production, and create sustainable jobs.

The Feed Ghana Programme forms a core component of the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), which seeks to modernize agriculture and secure food availability. Ghana currently spends over $2 billion annually on food imports, with poultry alone accounting for $300 million. The FGP aims to reverse this trend by promoting local food production and reducing reliance on imports.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially launch the flagship programme on April 11, 2025, in Techiman, Bono East Region.

The programme will advance SMART agriculture, establishing Farmers' Service Centres and Farm Banks to support young entrepreneurs. It will also promote grains, legumes, and vegetables through dedicated initiatives. The "YƐREDUA" project will focus on greenhouse vegetable production and community gardening.

The Feed Ghana Programme will also support institutional farming and the poultry industry through the 'Poultry Farm to Table' project and the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative. Livestock and industrial crop initiatives, including oil palm and rubber, will also receive a boost.

To support these efforts, the programme will invest in agro-production enclaves, irrigation systems, and innovative agricultural financing, including concessional loans through Exim Bank and insurance coverage under GIRSAL.

Hon. Opoku urged Ghanaians to support the initiative, emphasizing that transforming agriculture will secure food security and economic growth for the nation.
