Wacam Clarifies Stance on Alleged Illegal Mining

Wacam, a human rights and environmental advocacy group, has refuted claims in a recent publication by The Fourth Estate regarding alleged illegal mining activities linked to Bodukwan Holding Company Limited and its purported ties to the Manhyia Palace.

In a rejoinder signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, Wacam expressed concern over how its Technical Director’s remarks were referenced in the publication, stating that the comments were taken out of context. The group clarified that the interview granted to The Fourth Estate focused on general issues of mining irregularities and human rights violations, without any specific mention of Manhyia Palace or the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Furthermore, Wacam denied having a staff member named Dr. Kwaku Afriyie as its Technical Director, describing the attribution in the publication as erroneous. The organization called on The Fourth Estate to rectify this misrepresentation to ensure accuracy and fairness in its reporting.

Reaffirming its commitment to responsible mining practices, Wacam emphasized that all mining operations must adhere to legal and regulatory frameworks to prevent environmental harm and human rights violations. The group urged the media to ensure its views are not misconstrued in public discourse.
