PNP Calls for Gender Equality in Leadership

The People's National Party (PNP) has marked International Women's Day with a strong call for greater female representation in Ghana’s leadership. In a statement, the party emphasized the need to break long-standing gender barriers in key government positions.

PNP Chairperson and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla, highlighted the contributions of women to Ghana’s development, particularly in finance and agriculture. She noted, however, that despite their significant role in the economy, no woman has ever been appointed as Minister of Finance, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, or Minister of Agriculture.

“As we celebrate this year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,’ we call on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize gender inclusivity in his cabinet reshuffles,” Nabla stated.

She criticized the lack of diversity in leadership, attributing Ghana’s repeated economic struggles—culminating in 18 visits to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)—to a failure to embrace different perspectives.

With 85% of rural women engaged in farming, the PNP questioned why no woman has ever led the Ministry of Agriculture. The party believes that such oversight hinders Ghana’s agricultural progress and food security.

The PNP also proposed a more strategic approach to empowering women entrepreneurs. While President Mahama has promised a Women Development Bank, the party suggests utilizing the existing Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) to support women-led businesses instead of creating a new financial institution.

The statement concluded with a call for Ghana to meet its constitutional obligation of ensuring at least 30% female representation in leadership roles across all sectors.

“As we commemorate International Women's Day, let us commit to real action for gender equality. Women's voices must be heard, their contributions recognized, and their potential fully realized,” Nabla said.

The PNP reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for women's rights and sustainable development under the slogan: "My Family, My Community, My Motherland."
