Ghanaian Youth to Benefit from Government Overseas Work Program

The Ghanaian government has officially launched the Ghana Work Abroad Programme under the theme “Opportunities Beyond Borders.” The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, aims to provide structured, legal pathways for young professionals to secure employment abroad while addressing the country’s growing unemployment crisis.

In his keynote address, the Labour Minister, Hon. Dr. Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, described the programme as a milestone in Ghana’s development agenda, aligning with the promises made by President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC to tackle youth unemployment.

“The Work Abroad Programme is a testament to our commitment to empowering young Ghanaians. By fostering structured labour migration, we are not only addressing unemployment but also positioning our youth as key drivers of national and global development,” Dr. Pelpuo stated.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), which will oversee the registration and training of selected applicants. CEO of YEA, Malik Basintale, emphasized that the programme is more than just an employment opportunity—it’s an investment in Ghana’s future.

“We are not just sending people abroad to work; we are ensuring they are well-trained and legally employed, setting them up for long-term success,” Basintale noted.

Beyond job creation, the initiative is designed to curb irregular migration, a growing challenge as many young Ghanaians risk dangerous journeys in search of better opportunities. Backed by international partners including the European Union, GIZ, IOM, ICMPD, and the ILO, the programme guarantees ethical recruitment and worker protection.

While concerns have been raised about the potential for brain drain, YEA’s CEO, Mr. Malik Basintale, argued that the initiative will ultimately benefit Ghana.

“Ghanaian workers will gain valuable international experience, which will contribute to the economy upon their return,” he explained.

The General Manager of Structural Precision SRL, Mr. Andre Petru Marin, reaffirmed Romania’s readiness to welcome Ghanaian workers.

“We have made all the necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth transition. Upon arrival, workers will receive additional training, proper accommodation, and immediate employment,” Marin assured.

For job seekers like Kwame Asare, a trained welder from Kumasi, the programme offers a life-changing opportunity.

“I’ve struggled to find consistent work despite my skills. This programme gives me a real chance to earn, save, and support my family,” he shared.

The launch event was graced by several dignitaries, including a representative of the Ga Mantse, HRM Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, Chairman of the Special Group of Companies and Chairman of the Work Abroad Programme, Mr. Andreas Berding, Head of the Ghanaian-European Centre, and Mr. Andrei-Petru Marin, International Recruiter and Entrepreneur.

With strong government backing and international support, the Ghana Work Abroad Programme is set to redefine employment opportunities, offering young Ghanaians a safer, structured, and rewarding path to global job markets.
