NLC Strengthens Ties with Media on Labour Issues
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has engaged the media on dispute settlement procedures under the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), emphasizing the role of journalists in accurately reporting labour issues. The event, held at the Ghana Shippers Authority Hall in Accra, was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Commission and the media to enhance public understanding of labour laws.
Dr. Bernice Welbeck, Director of Administration & Human Resources at the NLC, highlighted the Commission’s achievements since its establishment in April 2005. She revealed that between 2005 and December 2024, the NLC received 12,644 complaints, affecting over 10 million workers across both public and private sectors. The Commission successfully resolved 75% of these cases, with the remaining 25% at various stages of resolution.
Industrial disputes, including strikes and lockouts, were also addressed, with the NLC handling 302 such cases, resolving 87% of them. Dr. Welbeck emphasized that the Commission has played a critical role in preventing industrial actions by mediating conflicts before they escalate.
The engagement featured discussions on the NLC’s mandate, dispute resolution procedures, and best practices for media reporting on labour conflicts. Participants were urged to use their platforms to educate workers and the public on labour rights and the Commission’s role in ensuring fair employment practices.
The event ended with an open forum where journalists and stakeholders shared insights and sought clarifications on key labour issues, reinforcing the NLC’s commitment to fostering industrial harmony in Ghana.
