Minister Pledges to Tackle More Housing and Defense Projects
The Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has embarked on a familiarization tour of key ongoing projects, reaffirming the government’s commitment to timely completion and efficiency. The tour, which covered housing and coastal defense projects, aimed to assess progress and address challenges affecting project timelines.
Hon. Adjei visited the National Homeownership Fund Housing Project at Shai Hills, the National Homeownership Fund Affordable Housing Project at Community 22, and the Ningo-Prampram Coastal Sea Defense Project. He acknowledged that while progress had been made, some projects were behind schedule, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to timelines.
"This is my first tour since assuming office, and I wanted to verify firsthand if what I’ve been reading in reports aligns with the reality on the ground," the minister stated. "Some projects are delayed, and we will engage contractors to ensure that moving forward, there are no unnecessary setbacks. The government is committed to completing all projects without leaving any stalled."
Touching on coastal protection, Hon. Adjei reaffirmed the government’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property along Ghana’s coastline. He noted that while sea defense projects are costly and currently funded solely by the government, efforts are underway to explore alternative financing sources. "We are determined to complete ongoing sea defense projects in Cape Coast, Axim, Dansoman, and other affected areas," he assured.
On the pressing issue of urban flooding, the minister highlighted ongoing dredging of the Odaw River’s lower and upper basins. However, he urged the public to play their part by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of waste in drains. "We have intensified public education on this issue. If we all cooperate, we can manage flooding more effectively this year," he stated.
Hon. Adjei further reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that all housing projects, particularly the stalled Saglemi Housing Project, are completed. "I have started engaging key stakeholders, and work will resume soon," he assured.
His tour signals a proactive approach toward infrastructure development, reinforcing the government’s vision for efficient housing and coastal protection projects across Ghana.
