Media, NLC Collaborate to Enhance Labour Dispute Coverage

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has called for greater collaboration with the media to enhance public understanding of labour relations and industrial dispute resolution. Speaking at a media engagement in Accra, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Hon. Ofosu Asamoah, emphasized the crucial role of the media in shaping public opinion and ensuring accurate information dissemination.

According to Hon. Asamoah, misinformation during industrial disputes often fuels unnecessary tensions, making it imperative for journalists to understand the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) and the Commission’s dispute resolution processes. He stressed that labour stability is essential for economic growth and investor confidence, highlighting Ghana’s transition from colonial-era "master-servant" labour relations to a more balanced social partnership approach.

The National Labour Commission, established nearly two decades ago, serves as an independent arbiter in labour disputes. However, public awareness of its functions remains low, leading to misinterpretations in media discussions. The engagement aimed to bridge this knowledge gap, encouraging journalists to play a more informed role in labour-related reportage.

Hon. Asamoah urged participants to take the discussions seriously, as improved media coverage could foster industrial harmony and ensure compliance with labour laws. The event reinforced the Commission’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with the media for a more informed and fair labour environment in Ghana.
