Interior Minister Pledges Support for Firefighters’ Welfare
The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed–Mubarak, has assured officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) of his commitment to addressing their challenges and enhancing their operational capacity. Speaking during his maiden visit to the GNFS Headquarters on Thursday, February 19, 2025, he commended the dedication and professionalism of firefighters across the country.
The Minister acknowledged the critical role the GNFS plays beyond firefighting, highlighting their contributions to emergency response, disaster rescue, and fire safety education. He praised the service for its relentless efforts in protecting lives and property, noting that their work is fundamental to national security and economic growth.
“Fire safety remains a crucial pillar of national development. The government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, is committed to creating a safe environment for businesses and investors, and your role is indispensable in achieving this vision,” he stated.
Government to Enhance Fire Service Infrastructure and Welfare
Hon. Mohammed–Mubarak assured officers that the government is prioritizing key interventions to improve the GNFS. These include building accommodation for personnel in newly created regions, procuring additional fire tenders and rescue equipment, and reviewing compensation packages for firefighters injured or killed in the line of duty.
He also emphasized the need for intensified fire prevention efforts, calling for enhanced public education, stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations, and closer collaboration with stakeholders. He lauded the introduction of Fire Service TV as a platform for promoting fire safety awareness and pledged to support its operations.
As part of efforts to boost inter-agency collaboration, the Minister committed to strengthening ties between the GNFS and other security agencies to ensure a more coordinated response to disasters. He encouraged officers to maintain professionalism, uphold discipline, and provide input towards transforming the Service into a world-class firefighting and rescue organization.
“My doors are always open for your ideas and suggestions. I have full confidence in your abilities and will work with you to enhance operations and improve service delivery,” he assured.
