Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak Outlines Bold Reforms for NADMO
The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has outlined key government initiatives aimed at strengthening Ghana’s disaster management and response systems. Speaking during his working visit to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Headquarters on Thursday, February 19, 2025, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
In his address, Hon. Mubarak commended NADMO’s staff for their dedication despite the numerous challenges they face. He announced five major initiatives designed to enhance the organization’s efficiency and improve Ghana’s overall disaster management framework.
Key Initiatives Unveiled
The Minister highlighted the upcoming launch of Rescue Ready, a volunteer corps trained as first responders to support NADMO in emergency situations. This initiative aims to provide swift and coordinated responses to disasters, ensuring affected communities receive immediate assistance.
Additionally, the government plans to consolidate all disaster response frameworks into a National Disaster Preparedness System to streamline inter-agency coordination, making disaster risk reduction, preparedness, and recovery more effective.
A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of the NADMO Fund, as mandated by the National Disaster Management Organization Act, 2016 (Act 927). The fund will provide sustainable financial resources for disaster response operations, risk reduction initiatives, and capacity-building programs for NADMO staff.
The Minister also emphasized the need for NADMO Operational Reforms to strengthen the organization’s structure, resource allocation, and stakeholder collaboration, ensuring efficient disaster prevention and response mechanisms.
Furthermore, Hon. Mubarak revealed plans for Temporary Livelihood Support and Employment Programmes for displaced youth, focusing on skills training and entrepreneurship to help affected individuals rebuild their lives.
Hon. Mubarak concluded his speech by assuring NADMO staff of the government’s unwavering support and called for collective efforts to enhance disaster management in Ghana. “Together, we can make a difference and save lives,” he stated.
His visit marks the beginning of a series of engagements with key agencies under the Ministry of the Interior, as part of efforts to strengthen national security and emergency response systems.
