Dr. Pelpuo Outlines Vision for Labour and Employment


The newly appointed Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has pledged to prioritize job creation, workers' rights, and economic growth as he officially assumes office.


During his maiden engagement with management and staff of the Ministry, Dr. Pelpuo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, acknowledging the critical role of the labour sector in shaping Ghana’s workforce and protecting workers' rights. He emphasized his commitment to learning from experienced stakeholders to ensure effective policy direction.

Government’s Vision for Job Creation and Labour Rights

Dr. Pelpuo assured stakeholders that the government, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is committed to creating decent jobs, improving livelihoods, and enhancing productivity. He outlined his key priorities, which include:


1. Job Creation and Employment Opportunities – The Ministry will work to reduce unemployment and underemployment, particularly among youth, women, and vulnerable groups. Collaboration with the private sector, educational institutions, and development partners will be strengthened to enhance skills training, entrepreneurship, and labour market access.


2. Workers' Rights and Social Protection – Dr. Pelpuo reaffirmed government’s commitment to fair treatment and workplace safety, pledging to accelerate work on the Occupational Safety and Health Bill to protect workers and ensure better social protection.


3. Industrial Relations and Workplace Standards – The government will enhance dispute resolution, collective bargaining, and social dialogue to maintain industrial peace and productivity.


4. Strengthening Institutions and Capacity Building – Dr. Pelpuo promised to build the capacity of ministry staff and institutions to enhance service delivery and ensure efficient labour governance.


Economic Challenges and Workers' Welfare


Addressing Ghana’s economic situation, Dr. Pelpuo stressed the need for collaborative efforts to navigate challenges while ensuring fair compensation for workers. He urged workers to remain patient and cooperative as the government works towards economic recovery and sustainable wage payments.


A Call for Teamwork and Dedication


Dr. Pelpuo encouraged staff to work diligently and uphold professionalism in service delivery. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and commitment in achieving the ministry’s goals, adding, "Ghana’s development is a reflection of the hard work of its labour force, and we must honor them with policies that protect and uplift them."


He urged all stakeholders to support government policies aimed at job creation, worker protection, and economic transformation, promising an open-door policy for dialogue and collaboration.

Royal Jamong Family Raises Alarm Over Alleged Political Interference in Bunkpurugu Chieftaincy Dispute

The Royal Jamong Family of Bunkpurugu has expressed deep concern over what it describes as political interference by Vice President Dr. Mahamud Bawumia and the NPP parliamentary candidate for Bunkpurugu, Mr. Solomon N. Boar, in the ongoing chieftaincy dispute surrounding the Bunkpurugu skin. Electrochem’s Ada Salt Deal in Jeopardy

The 15-year mining lease agreements for Electrochem Ghana Limited, a private salt mining company to mine salt on the Ada Songhor Lagoon appears to be in jeopardy with the withdrawal of consent to the agreement by the allodia owners of the lagoon.  The latest blow to Electrochem which is owned by Daniel McKorley, Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies is the withdrawal of consent by Nene Korley IV who is the Divisional Chief and Clan-head of the Tekperbiawe Clan of the Ada Traditional Area.  In a letter written to Mr. McKorley through his lawyers A-F Amissah & Wood Solicitors and Barristers Consultants dated 11th February 2025 and titled, “Letter of Withdrawal of Consent to Electrochem’s Dealing With the Songor Lagoon”, Nene Korley IV cited thuggery, insecurity in Ada, violation of rights of the indigenes and locals among others as the reasons for his withdrawal of consent to the company’s dealings with the Songor lagoon.
