UG Students Educate Ningo School on Climate Action
Students from the Department of Communication at the University of Ghana, under the banner of EcoAction Ghana, have undertaken a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to educate learners at Abia D/A Basic School in the Ningo-Prampram District on climate change and recycling.
The initiative aimed to enhance climate literacy by dispelling myths surrounding climate change and promoting the reuse and recycling of plastic waste. Team leader Eulogia A. N. Aidoo explained that the project focused on improving students' understanding of climate issues and inspiring them to become environmental ambassadors.
“We engaged the students on climate change and how to recycle or reuse plastic waste by turning them into useful items such as pencil holders and trash bins,” Aidoo stated. She encouraged schools to integrate climate change topics into their curricula to ensure continuous awareness.
Patricia Selase Apietu, another member of EcoAction Ghana, urged students to leverage social and traditional media to advocate for climate action in their communities, emphasizing the importance of youth voices in addressing climate challenges.
The program made a lasting impression on participants. Foli Felicia Mawuse, a student, shared her commitment to promoting tree planting within her family, while Fiali Mathias debunked misconceptions about climate change, asserting it as a scientific issue rather than a spiritual one.
With support from Mr. Freeman Amanor, the school’s science facilitator, EcoAction Ghana plans to establish an Eco-Group at Abia D/A Basic School. The group will continue driving climate change awareness and environmental protection efforts within the school community.
This initiative aligns with the Ghana Education Service’s efforts to integrate climate change education into school curricula and promote environmental stewardship among students through various programs and partnerships.
