Justice Sought for Eight Killed in Elections

The President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has formally requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to initiate immediate investigations into the deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. The directive, conveyed through the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, underscores the need for justice and transparency in addressing these tragic incidents, which have left a significant mark on Ghana’s democratic process.

The letter proposes the establishment of a dedicated investigative taskforce within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to focus exclusively on these cases. It also calls for collaboration with witnesses and victims' families, a review of security arrangements during the elections, and the use of forensic evidence to unravel the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Additionally, the letter advocates for periodic updates on the investigation’s progress to ensure public trust and transparency. The President reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting the Ghana Police Service in their efforts to deliver justice and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
