Police Deputy IGP Drags Media General to Court
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP) in charge of operations, Tettey Yohunu, has filed a lawsuit against popular media personality Blessed Godsbrain Smart, alias Captain Smart, and Media General Limited, the operators of Onua TV and Onua FM. The suit, filed at the High Court in Accra, seeks redress for alleged defamatory statements made by Captain Smart during his program, Onua Maakye, on December 27, 2024.
According to the writ, Captain Smart accused the Deputy IGP of engaging in political maneuvering to secure his appointment, bribery, and alleged involvement in destabilization efforts within Ghana’s political landscape. These claims, aired on Onua TV, Onua FM, and shared on social media platforms, are described by the plaintiff as false, malicious, and injurious to his reputation as a seasoned law enforcement officer.
The plaintiff contends that the statements have caused significant damage to his reputation, exposing him to public ridicule and contempt. Among other reliefs, he is seeking a declaration that the statements are defamatory, an injunction to prevent further publication of such claims, and a public retraction with apologies aired on Onua TV, Onua FM, and their social media platforms.
Mr. Yohunu, who boasts an illustrious career in law enforcement both locally and internationally, emphasized his unblemished track record, including serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions and receiving a Grand Medal for combating armed robbery in Ghana. He argues that the allegations undermine his professional integrity and years of dedicated service.
The court is expected to deliberate on the case in the coming weeks.
