Armed Assailants Raid Electrochem, Injure Workers
Electrochem Ghana Limited has strongly condemned a violent attack on its facility in the early hours of Thursday, allegedly carried out by armed individuals claiming affiliation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The assailants, wielding cutlasses and firearms, stormed the premises at around 3:00 am, ransacking offices and stealing essential supplies, including a significant quantity of salt from the warehouse. According to Electrochem, the attackers were led by a known NDC activist and claimed to have been sent by the party’s headquarters.
The incident left several employees injured and caused extensive financial and operational damage. Electrochem Ghana, a major salt mining company employing over 1,800 permanent staff and 3,000 seasonal workers, described the attack as part of a disturbing trend that threatens the safety of its workforce and the stability of its operations.
"This brazen act of lawlessness undermines the investment climate in our region and endangers the livelihoods of thousands who rely on our operations," said Abdul Razak Adam, CEO of Electrochem Ghana Limited.
Electrochem highlighted its contributions to the community, including education initiatives, clean water infrastructure, and micro-loan programs for women entrepreneurs. The company called on the government and security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators swiftly, emphasizing the need for accountability to deter future attacks.
The management also urged public condemnation of the incident, stressing that protecting legitimate businesses is crucial to maintaining economic stability in the region.
The police are yet to comment on the incident, but Electrochem has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of its employees and operations while seeking justice for the attack.
