Speaker Bagbin Prepares to Recall Parliament Amid CPA Conference Duties

A five-member delegation from Ghana's Council of State, led by Chairman Nana Otuo Siriboe II, paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, today. The delegation sought to gain firsthand insight into the recent events within the legislature, which have led to the indefinite adjournment of Parliament.

During the meeting, the Council of State expressed its readiness to work alongside Speaker Bagbin and the House leadership to address any challenges that have hindered parliamentary proceedings. Their goal is to resolve the impasse and enable the swift recall of Parliament.

Speaker Bagbin provided the delegation with an overview of the current situation in Parliament and outlined the rationale behind his recent remarks on the House floor. He reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana's democratic progress and the welfare of its citizens.

The Council of State praised Speaker Bagbin for his role in upholding Ghana's democratic standards. His leadership extends beyond Ghana, as he currently holds key positions in international parliamentary organizations, including as President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association International (CPA), President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSHAL), and an executive member of the International Legislative Advisory Council of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in the U.S.

Nana Otuo Siriboe II commended the Speaker’s dedication to serving Ghana's democratic interests and urged him to continue his impactful work.

Speaker Bagbin also informed the Council that he will lead Ghana’s delegation to the 67th CPA Conference in Sydney, Australia, from November 3-8. During this conference, he will officially hand over the CPA presidency to the Speaker of the Parliament of New South Wales, Australia. However, due to an urgent request by Members of Parliament, he plans to return to Ghana earlier than scheduled to recall Parliament in early November.

Additionally, Speaker Bagbin recently secured re-election as President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures, further reinforcing his influence in parliamentary leadership across Africa.
