Reformation Day: Ghana’s Lutheran Church Marks Historic Call to Return to Scripture

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana celebrated Reformation Day on October 31, a tradition observed globally to remember the pivotal actions that led to the Protestant Reformation. In an interview, Rev. John Shadrack Donkoh, President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana, emphasized the importance of this day, which marks Martin Luther’s call for change within the Roman Catholic Church in 1517.

Rev. Donkoh explained that the Reformation began when Martin Luther, then a Catholic priest, opposed church practices that replaced Biblical teachings with human traditions. Luther famously posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church, sparking widespread debate. "Luther’s actions were driven by a desire to bring people back to the true word of God," Rev. Donkoh said, noting that the movement led to the formation of other Christian denominations.

During the event, Rev. Donkoh also spoke out against the rise of false prophets, urging Ghanaians to stay vigilant. “There is no ‘new revelation’ to be given,” he said. "False prophets mislead people with talk of doom and false promises, taking advantage of the vulnerable and sometimes leading them to early graves." He encouraged believers to rely on the Gospel, which, he said, "has everything we need for salvation."

Rev. Donkoh also addressed the challenges facing Ghana today, particularly the destructive impact of illegal mining on water bodies. He called on Ghanaians to seek God’s forgiveness and take action to preserve the environment. On Ghana’s democracy, he expressed hope that the upcoming elections would be peaceful and credible, urging all stakeholders to ensure fair conduct. "Elections should be a normal, peaceful process to choose leaders who will guide our nation forward," he stated.

In conclusion, Rev. Donkoh expressed gratitude to the Lutheran Schools’ Director and teachers for organizing a successful event to commemorate Reformation Day. He highlighted the importance of remembering history to strengthen faith and uphold integrity in the modern world.
