Ghana's Farmers' Day: GAWU Urges Parties to Prioritize Agriculture and Support Farmers

As Ghana marks its 40th National Farmers' Day, the General Agricultural Workers’ Union (GAWU) of TUC pays tribute to the hard work and resilience of farmers, food processors, and all contributors within the agricultural value chain. GAWU’s General Secretary, Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe, emphasized that while Ghana's farmers play a crucial role in feeding the nation, they remain among the country's most disadvantaged groups.

GAWU's press release highlighted several critical challenges facing farmers, including post-harvest losses, inadequate access to inputs, climate change, and the growing threat of illegal mining, commonly known as "galamsey." This illegal activity has degraded land, polluted water sources, and undermined agricultural productivity, jeopardizing food security and rural livelihoods.

To address these issues, GAWU called on all political parties to prioritize agriculture in their manifestos, with specific policies aimed at improving farmers' livelihoods. The Union also urged the government to enforce stronger measures to eliminate galamsey and invest in climate-resilient agricultural practices. Emphasizing the need for climate-smart farming, GAWU advocated for the provision of drought-resistant seeds, better land management, integrated pest control, and expanded irrigation infrastructure.

The Union further called on the government to regulate pesticide usage, promote occupational safety, and support agricultural extension officers who play an essential role in educating farmers. This comprehensive approach, GAWU believes, would help lift farmers out of poverty, protect rural communities, and secure Ghana’s food supply.

In concluding their statement, GAWU reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that uplift Ghanaian farmers, ensuring fair treatment, safer working conditions, and improved economic opportunities for those who work tirelessly to nourish the nation.
