Energy Expo 2024: Ghana’s Path to Sustainable Power and International Collaboration

Accra, Ghana - Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy, addressed dignitaries, industry leaders, and participants at the Power and Energy Expo 2024, held at the International Conference Centre in Accra. Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Energy, Mrs. Asamoah commended the organizers for delivering a well-executed event that gathered over 1,000 professionals from around the globe.

Mrs. Asamoah emphasized the significance of such a platform, stating that "the expo is key to driving growth in Ghana's energy sector." She acknowledged the international participation of guests from India, China, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Turkey, and Egypt, highlighting the value of cross-border collaboration in the energy industry. “This Expo serves not only Ghana but also the West African region, providing a space for innovation, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange,” she remarked.

The Energy Expo has created a significant economic impact, with studies indicating that similar exhibitions can inject millions of dollars into the local economy. “Events like this offer unparalleled opportunities for local businesses to form international partnerships, fostering long-term growth and technological advancement in the energy sector,” Mrs. Asamoah noted.

Ghana has made strides in energy access, with over 85% of Ghanaians now connected to the grid. The Ministry of Energy is committed to achieving full access by 2030 through increased grid connections and alternative solutions, such as off-grid technologies and cleaner cooking methods, to serve remote communities.

Mrs. Asamoah underscored Ghana’s dedication to renewable energy, with a policy target to increase the share of renewables to at least 10%. This includes scaling solar energy projects and collaborating with private sector partners. The Ministry of Energy, in partnership with the Ghana Energy Commission and the Ghana Renewable Energy Association, has introduced regulatory measures aimed at enhancing investment, efficiency, and the sector’s self-sufficiency.

She also pointed to the rising capabilities of local manufacturers, who are now able to meet a greater share of domestic energy demands. “Connecting local manufacturers and service providers with international companies enables technology transfer and access to global supply chains,” Mrs. Asamoah stated. This initiative is expected to strengthen Ghana’s resilience and support the nation’s growing energy demands.

Mrs. Asamoah concluded by expressing Ghana’s commitment to becoming a regional hub for sustainable energy. She invited international partners to join Ghana on its journey towards energy independence and economic diversification, adding that “the Power and Energy Expo exemplifies our collective progress, resilience, and dedication to a sustainable energy future.”

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA); H.E. Shri Manish Gupta, High Commissioner of India to Ghana; and H.E. Mrs. Harriet Thompson, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Ghana. The presence of these key figures underscored the event’s importance in promoting Ghana as a leader in the energy sector.
